The Fifty Six

Brisbane City, QLD
The Story

On the top floor of Naldham House, a sandstone survivor from 1864 restored and reopened as a dining destination, this Cantonese room trades on both history and view. It takes its name from Queensland's first Chinese arrivals, a group of labourers who came ashore in Brisbane in 1848, and the cooking carries that sense of lineage into the present. The chef, whose Singaporean upbringing threads through the menu, gives Cantonese classics a contemporary polish: yum cha and dumplings at lunch, a broader a la carte at night, all plated with fine-dining precision on marble-topped tables. The setting is unashamedly grand, the heritage bones of the building offset by modern sophistication and city outlooks, yet the food avoids fuss for its own sake, technique in service of familiar flavours rather than novelty. Service runs Tuesday to Saturday across lunch and dinner, with the kitchen open late. It is a room built for occasion, whether a long, unhurried yum cha or a considered dinner, and one that treats Cantonese cooking as something worth dressing up for. The result is among the more ambitious Chinese dining rooms Brisbane has opened in recent years, and one of the more considered uses of a heritage building in the city.
