CherryHill Orchards
The Yarra Valley has a way of making an afternoon disappear, and CherryHill Orchards is one of the better reasons to let it. This is, by its own reckoning, Australia's largest u-pick cherry orchard, and it operates across two sites — the original orchard at Wandin East, where the first trees went into the ground back in 1940, and a second at Coldstream, added later as the family's growing operation expanded through the valley. Both open to the public each summer, from November through to January, when the branches hang heavy and visitors are handed the simple, satisfying job of picking their own fruit straight from the tree. There's a particular pleasure in cherry season that other pick-your-own crops don't quite match — the low trees, the speed of it, the way a punnet fills before you've really settled into the rhythm. CherryHill leans into that ease rather than dressing it up: come with a picnic blanket, spend a slow hour or two moving through the rows, and stay on for lunch at the grounds if the mood takes you. Both orchards run farmgate stores and cafes, so the day can be as unhurried as you like — pick in the morning, eat in the shade, buy more to take home on the way out. Autumn brings a second act, when the cherry trees give way to apples and the valley's colours turn over entirely. What makes CherryHill worth the drive from Melbourne isn't novelty — it's continuity. The Riseborough family has been growing cherries here since George planted that first orchard in 1940, and the operation today, spread across Wandin East and Coldstream, still carries the unmistakable feel of a working family farm rather than a tourist stop dressed up as one. Spring has its own following too, when the blossom draws its own crowd before the fruit ever appears.
