Palace Hotel

137 Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie WA 6430, Kalgoorlie WA
The Story

When Kalgoorlie was still young with gold fever, still rough with the appetite of a frontier town, the Palace Hotel rose in 1897 as an assertion of permanence and refinement. It was the grandest accommodation Western Australia could offer outside Perth—a statement of faith in the permanence of the mines, in the staying power of the fortune seekers who'd descended on the red earth. That confidence is readable still in the bones of the building, in the way it commands its place in the town's social geography. The foyer holds a carved mirror that once reflected the face of Herbert Hoover, the young mining engineer who became a regular here before his life took its unlikely turn toward the American presidency. It's the sort of artifact that speaks to the hotel's role as a meeting ground for serious men with serious ambitions—though like any good pub, it has never been precious about its history. The building has simply continued doing what it was built to do: providing shelter, company, and sustenance. Today the Palace comprises three distinct spaces that serve different moods and hours. The Irish Pub operates all day, offering counter meals and the easy informality of a working pub. The Balcony Bar & Restaurant opens for evening service, while the Gold Bar provides nightlife when the sun has fully gone. Upstairs, there are rooms to sleep in, as there have been for more than a century. The food is honest pub fare—lamb, desserts, the kind of meal that doesn't pretend to be other than it is. To walk through its doors is to enter a room where the texture of time is visible: the wear of a hundred years of elbows on the bar, the accumulated warmth of a town that has learned to live with both fortune and its absence. It remains what it has always been—a place where people gather.
