The Story

On the road into Coles Bay, in the shadow of the Freycinet peninsula's pink granite peaks, Freycinet Marine Farm has been showcasing Tasmania's best seafood since Julia and Giles Fisher took it on in 2005. Oysters and mussels come off the farm's own leases each morning; scallops, rock lobster and sustainably caught scalefish are drawn from the surrounding waters. You eat it on the deck with a glass of Tasmanian wine, or carry it off to a nearby beach — and the one thing not to miss is the signature scallop pie, sweet local scallops in a creamy filling under buttery pastry, exactly the comfort a cold coast day calls for. It's a walk-in, no-bookings sort of place, with farm tours run by neighbours at Oyster Bay Tours. Twenty minutes from one of the country's great national parks, it's worth the detour on its own.
