Buninyong Blueberries

Buninyong, VIC
The Story

Buninyong sits in the folds of Victoria's goldfields, a town of bluestone and quiet streets just south of Ballarat, and it's here — away from the more familiar pick-your-own corridors of the Yarra Valley or the Peninsula — that you'll find a blueberry farm that keeps its own counsel. There's no fanfare to the place, no queue of tour buses. Just rows of bushes heavy with fruit through the height of summer, and a bucket in your hand. The season here follows its own clock, kicking off around Australia Day and carrying through into the warmer months as the berries ripen properly from late January. Entry to pick is free — you wander the rows, take your time, and pay only for what you carry out by weight. It's an honest, uncomplicated arrangement, the kind that rewards patience: the best fruit tends to hide low and deep in the bush, and there's a quiet satisfaction in filling a container yourself rather than buying it shrink-wrapped from a shelf. What makes Buninyong Blueberries worth the drive is partly its setting. This is goldfields country, gently undulating and still dotted with the bones of its mining past, a landscape more associated with heritage towns and cellar doors than berry farms. Coming here in high summer, with Ballarat just up the road and the paddocks turning gold around you, feels like stumbling on something slightly out of place — in the best way. There's little pretence about the experience: a farm doing one thing, in one short window of the year, and doing it plainly. Bring sun protection, bring patience, and expect to leave with stained fingers and more blueberries than you probably planned on.
